When the towers fell, New York Post photo journalist Matthew McDermott hopped on a motorcycle downtown and captured the harrowing scene. “By 9:00 [p.m.], finally The Post got a hold of me,” he said. “I came in and I was still covered in dust. Skin was still burning.”

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, McDermott looks back at the chaos and humanity that he witnessed firsthand. Watch as he walks through his most striking shots — of firefighters, the rubble, a man covered in dust and coughing. “It felt like the whole world had been destroyed.”
