China is lashing out against western sanctions and foreign brand boycotts over human rights abuses against the Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. Beijing has since imposed sanctions on nine UK citizens for spreading what it calls “lies and disinformation”, while also taking aim at brands that have pledged to stop buying cotton from the city. Adrian Zenz, a senior fellow at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, tells The World the backlash could be “potentially devastating” for businesses.
